How to Avoid Wedding Money Mistakes

The funny thing about marriages is that most of the time we really only get to plan one of them. Since the first time we plan them is the only time we plan them, we don’t have a whole lot of experience planning weddings, and it can be very easy to make mistakes! You can end up getting a bad caterer, mixing up dates, getting a bad musician, the amount of potential mistakes are endless! A lot of times people just spend way too much money and don’t get what they paid for wedding services. Here are some ways to make sure you get what you paid for.

The first area that most couples end up paying much more than they should is photography. For our wedding, the best offer we got was $800! This is just for two hours of taking pictures and then putting them into a nice scrapbook! Chances are you’ll put your wedding picture on the wall and then never think about it again. Is that really worth the $800?! Instead, consider having a friend who is pretty decent with a camera come and take pictures. This way you won’t have to pay over $1000 for pictures you will rarely use, and this way you will actually own the copyright!

Couples also often pay way too much money on the reception. They buy all sorts of extravagant food from a professional caterer, and provide a full open bar. If you do an afternoon wedding, you can just provide some nice afternoon snacks, punch and a cake. This way you will save thousands on your catering!

Don’t pay too much for your rings either. You can get a good wedding band for a male for $100, and a nice women’s engagement ring for less than $1000. Don’t fall for the myth that you need to spend 2 months salary on an engagement ring! Buy what you can afford, it’s okay if your fiancée’s ring isn’t the biggest and best around. What matters to her is that it is from you.

There are so many other different areas where you can spend too much money if you do not realize what you are doing. Look online and see what you should be paying for each section of the wedding, to make sure that you aren’t spending more than you should. Don’t fall for the myth that you need to have a $10,000 wedding. You can have a very reasonable wedding for $3000 or $4000. You might not have a lot of fancy extras, but people don’t remember weddings based on how much money you spend, they remember them based on whether or not they had fun.
